About Local 560

OPSEU Local 560 is the Faculty Union at Seneca College, representing full time and partial load faculty, counselors and librarians.  We have a roster of stewards who are available in the workplace to answer your questions or refer you to one of the officers for additional help. Our local is part of the CAAT-A division of OPSEU (Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology – Academic). The CAAT-S group represents support staff at Ontario colleges.

Your union negotiates a collective agreement on your behalf, and assists you in resolving issues you may have in the workplace. These include workload, health and safety, equity, and benefits.

What can the Union do for me?

Your employee union is your representative with the employer. Local 560 serves full time and partial load faculty at Seneca College. There are other Locals across the province serving other colleges; all are part of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which is 125,000+ members strong.

Union action is united action. No matter where they work, union members become stronger when they take action together. Instead of one lone voice trying to speak for change, our union allows us together to influence employers and government to maintain safe, fair and reasonable working conditions for all employees. It allows us together to solve problems and ensure that each member is treated fairly. Through collective Bargaining, we negotiate workloads and terms of employment for faculty that are fair to everyone, including the employer and out students.

Your local speaks to and negotiates with the employer on your behalf. Our members serve on committees such as the Joint Insurance Committee which ensures benefits cases with Sun Life are handled appropriately. We attend local, regional and national conferences and conventions to speak for the interests of faculty at Seneca College as well as all faculty province-wide.

Prior to contract bargaining, we collect and present your contract demands for consideration and approval. The final list of demands is taken into bargaining by our Bargaining Committee.

We also keep a close eye on Health and Safety issues in the workplace through our Health & Safety Committee which makes sure faculty can feel safe at work, as well as deal with any issues that might arise. We have participated in reviewing the College’s Emergency Preparedness plan and work closely with the College to address any potential health hazards.
